Agartala, May 25:
In a decisive move to combat rising crime in the state capital, the New Capital Complex police under the West Tripura District Police arrested 13 individuals, including two notorious bike lifters and 11 drug users, during a special operation conducted on Sunday. The operation is part of the state’s intensified efforts to curb drug abuse and vehicle theft, following directives from Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and newly appointed DGP Anurag Dhankar.
Addressing the media, Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar revealed that bike theft incidents had surged following the recent release of Suman Das, a well-known bike lifter. A special surveillance team tracked and arrested Das from Radhanagar along with a stolen bike. Based on his confession, another accused, Suma Mia, was apprehended from Sonamura, Sepahijala, and a previously sold stolen motorcycle was recovered from him.
Further investigations led to the recovery of three more stolen bikes from various localities, including Indranagar, Abhaynagar, and West Pratapgarh. “Interrogations are ongoing, and more arrests and recoveries are expected soon,” SP Kumar stated.
In a parallel crackdown under the “Nesha Mukta Tripura” (Drug-Free Tripura) campaign, police arrested 11 drug users from different parts of Agartala. Some of them reportedly belong to prominent families, while others are in serious health conditions and require immediate rehabilitation.
“These individuals will receive medical treatment and counseling through NGOs and state-supported health services,” SP Kumar said. “Our approach targets not just suppliers and traffickers, but also users, to fight the problem at both ends.”
This operation highlights the government’s zero-tolerance policy on crime and substance abuse, with assurances of more sustained and coordinated actions to ensure public safety.
