Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted the transformative impact of the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’, noting that the benefits of the ambitious rooftop solar scheme are now visible across the country, including in remote regions like Tripura.

Speaking during his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, the Prime Minister pointed to the growing reach of solar energy initiatives, particularly in the Northeast. He cited the example of Tripura, where several villages inhabited by the Riang tribe had long struggled with unreliable electricity supply. With the introduction of solar mini-grids under the scheme, these villages have witnessed a remarkable turnaround.

Modi said that homes once plunged into darkness after sunset are now illuminated, allowing children to continue their studies in the evening hours. The availability of electricity has also enabled residents to charge mobile phones regularly, improving communication and access to information. According to the Prime Minister, these changes have significantly enhanced the social and economic life of the communities.

Emphasising the broader impact of renewable energy adoption, Modi remarked that the solar revolution is no longer limited to select urban households. “If you visit any city today, whether big or small, you will notice solar panels installed on rooftops in large numbers. A few years ago, this was a rare sight, but today it has become increasingly common,” he said.

The ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’, described as one of the world’s largest household rooftop solar initiatives, aims to provide solar power to one crore households across India by March 2027. The scheme seeks not only to reduce electricity costs for households but also to promote clean energy and reduce dependence on conventional power sources.

Calling for wider participation, the Prime Minister urged citizens to join the solar energy movement and encourage others to adopt sustainable practices. “There are countless examples of the solar energy revolution in the country. Do become a part of it and inspire others as well,” he said.

The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in advancing India’s clean energy goals while improving the quality of life in underserved regions.
