Agartala, May 18: Tripura has reached a major milestone in railway modernization with the successful electrification of its entire 271-kilometre railway network stretching from Churaibari in North Tripura to Sabroom in the southern part of the state. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced that electric MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train services are expected to begin soon, ushering in a new phase of faster, cleaner, and more economical rail transport for the state.

The electrification project was carried out with the support of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), which played a key role in strengthening the railway power infrastructure. To ensure uninterrupted electricity supply for train operations, major traction substations have been established in Unakoti, Khowai, and Gomati districts.

Railway officials confirmed that several successful trial runs of electric locomotives have already been completed across the network, indicating that the infrastructure is fully prepared for regular passenger operations.

According to railway sources, MEMU train services are likely to commence by June 2026 on two important routes — Agartala to Dharmanagar and Agartala to Sabroom. These trains are specially designed for short and medium-distance travel and are expected to greatly benefit daily commuters, including students, office employees, traders, and passengers travelling between towns and semi-urban areas.

Compared to conventional diesel-powered trains, MEMU services offer multiple advantages such as quicker acceleration, shorter travel time, reduced operational costs, and significantly lower environmental pollution. Railway authorities stated that the new electric trains will also improve regional connectivity by allowing more stoppages at smaller stations, thereby making rail travel more accessible to rural and suburban populations.

Officials described the achievement as a landmark development for Tripura and a major step toward sustainable and eco-friendly transportation. The project also aligns with the Indian Railways’ broader vision of achieving green and energy-efficient rail operations across the country.

Final safety inspections, signalling upgrades, and operational testing are currently underway. If everything proceeds as scheduled, the formal inauguration of electric passenger services could take place within the next few weeks, marking a historic transformation in Tripura’s transport sector.
