Agartala, July 8: Torrential rainfall over the past 24 hours has severely disrupted normal life across several parts of Tripura, triggering flood-like conditions, damaging hundreds of houses, and forcing thousands of people to seek shelter in relief camps. Continuous downpours have also caused landslides, disrupted power supply, damaged agricultural fields, and affected road connectivity in multiple districts.

According to the latest information released by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), a total of 2,589 people have been evacuated and accommodated in 22 relief camps set up across the worst-affected Dhalai and Khowai districts. The district administrations, along with disaster response teams, are providing food, drinking water, medical assistance, and other essential supplies to the displaced families.

Khowai district has been among the hardest hit, with 1,402 people taking shelter in nine relief camps. In neighbouring Dhalai district, 1,187 people have been shifted to 13 relief camps as floodwaters inundated low-lying areas and heavy rains continued to lash the region.

The incessant rainfall has also triggered landslides at several locations in Khowai and Dhalai, damaging road infrastructure and disrupting vehicular movement. Several major rivers flowing through the state have crossed the expected flood level, raising concerns about further flooding if rainfall continues.

Official reports indicate that at least 300 houses have been damaged due to the heavy rains. Of these, 44 houses were completely destroyed, 77 suffered severe damage, while 179 were partially damaged. Assessment of losses is still underway, and the number of affected households may rise as reports continue to arrive from remote areas.

In North Tripura district, the administration shifted 70 people from 17 families to relief camps in Kanchanpur following a deterioration in the flood situation.

Meanwhile, widespread power outages have been reported from several parts of the state as heavy rains damaged electricity infrastructure. Agricultural lands have also suffered extensive damage, raising concerns among farmers about crop losses during the ongoing monsoon season.

The state administration is closely monitoring the evolving situation and has directed district authorities to remain on high alert. Rescue teams and emergency personnel have been deployed to vulnerable areas, while efforts are underway to restore essential services and ensure the safety and well-being of affected residents.
