Kumarghat: A severe shortage of teachers at Dhan Singh Choudhury English Medium Memorial Primary HS School in Kanchanbari under Kumarghat subdivision triggered a protest on Thursday morning, with parents and students locking the school gate and blocking the Kumarghat–Kanchanpur main road.

The agitation began on the school premises as parents, guardians and students gathered to protest what they described as a prolonged shortage of teaching staff. According to the protesters, nearly 400 students are enrolled in the morning section of the school, while only four teachers are currently available to conduct classes.

Parents alleged that the inadequate number of teachers has severely disrupted regular classroom activities and affected the quality of education. They claimed that the matter had been brought to the attention of the authorities on several occasions, but no effective measures had been taken to resolve the problem.

As the protest intensified, demonstrators locked the entrance gate of the school before moving onto the adjoining Kumarghat–Kanchanpur main road. They staged a blockade, disrupting vehicular movement and drawing attention to their demand for the immediate appointment of additional teachers.

The protesters demanded that the Education Department take urgent steps to deploy an adequate number of teachers at the school so that normal academic activities can resume. They warned that the agitation could be intensified in the coming days if the authorities fail to provide a permanent solution.

Parents and guardians said the shortage has persisted for a considerable period and claimed that students are being forced to bear the consequences. They stressed that the education of hundreds of children should not suffer because of administrative delays in addressing staffing requirements.

The demonstration attracted considerable attention in Kanchanbari and surrounding areas, with parents and local residents expressing support for the demand. Despite the road blockade and heightened tension, the protest remained peaceful.

The incident has brought renewed focus on teacher availability in schools across Tripura. Protesters urged the state government and Education Department to intervene without delay, arguing that adequate staffing is essential to ensure uninterrupted classes and protect the academic interests of students.
