Agartala: A closed-door meeting between the BJP and Tipra Motha leaders was held on Sunday to discuss seat-sharing arrangements for the upcoming TTAADC Village Committee elections, according to party sources.

The meeting assumes significance as the two parties work towards finalising their electoral understanding ahead of the polls.

Senior leaders from both the BJP and Tipra Motha attended the meeting, with discussions centred on seat-sharing and coordination between the two parties.

From the BJP side, Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury and Minister Tinku Roy were present. BJP Vice-President Uttara Debbarma and General Secretary Bipin Debbarma also attended the discussions.

Representing Tipra Motha, MLA Ranjit Debbarma, MLA Biswajit Kalai, Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma, Chief Executive Member (CEM) Purna Chandra Jamatia and Runiel Debbarma participated in the meeting.

The closed-door discussions come amid preparations for the forthcoming Village Committee elections, in which the BJP and Tipra Motha are expected to coordinate their electoral strategy.

The meeting is being viewed as an important step towards working out the details of the proposed seat-sharing arrangement and ensuring coordination at the grassroots level.

The BJP and Tipra Motha have had shifting political equations in Tripura over the past few years. The two parties contested separately in the 2023 Assembly elections but later entered into an understanding following the March 2024 tripartite accord involving the Centre, Tripura government and Tipra Motha.

Tipra Motha subsequently became part of the BJP-led state government and the two parties worked together during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

However, they contested separately in the 2026 TTAADC elections, where Tipra Motha secured a dominant victory by winning 24 of the 28 seats.

The latest seat-sharing discussions indicate renewed coordination between the two parties ahead of the Village Committee polls.

The upcoming elections are significant for political parties seeking to consolidate their organisational presence across the autonomous council areas.

The meeting also comes against the backdrop of continuing discussions over implementation of the 2024 accord and demands concerning the political, economic and constitutional rights of indigenous communities.

The leaders are expected to discuss the distribution of seats, local-level coordination and the broader strategy for the elections.

Details of the seat-sharing formula discussed during the meeting have not yet been officially disclosed.

Further developments are expected as the BJP and Tipra Motha move closer to finalising their electoral arrangement ahead of the September 28 Village Committee elections.
