Mumbai: April 04: Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, aged 87, passed away on Friday at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. The cause of death was cardiogenic shock, resulting from an acute myocardial infarction (severe heart attack), compounded by his ongoing battle with decompensated liver cirrhosis. Manoj Kumar had been hospitalized since February 21, 2025, after his health deteriorated significantly.

Dr. Santosh Shetty, CEO of Kokilaben Hospital, confirmed the news in an official statement, mentioning that the legendary actor passed away peacefully at around 3:30 AM due to age-related health issues after weeks of hospitalization.

Manoj Kumar, often referred to as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his iconic roles in patriotic films, made a lasting impact on Indian cinema. Born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar, Punjab, he became a beloved figure through his portrayal of nationalist characters in films like Shaheed, Upkar, and Purab Aur Paschim. His performances in the 60s and 70s resonated deeply with Indian audiences, especially those who admired his emphasis on national pride.

In addition to his acting career, Kumar was a successful director and producer, with hits like Kranti, Clerk, and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan under his belt. Later in life, he also ventured into politics, joining the BJP after his retirement from films.

Following the news of his death, tributes poured in from fans, celebrities, and politicians. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned his passing, calling him an icon of Indian cinema whose work ignited a sense of patriotism and pride. His legacy in shaping Indian cinema and his contribution to national spirit will continue to inspire generations.
