Agartala, May 31: A massive fire broke out late Thursday night at the Maharajganj Bazaar in Agartala, gutting six shops and causing significant property damage. The incident has left local traders devastated, with losses estimated to be substantial.

The fire, which erupted in the dead of night, quickly spread through the vegetable market section of the busy commercial area. While no casualties have been reported, the affected shop owners lost goods worth lakhs of rupees. The exact cause of the blaze is yet to be determined.

On Friday morning, Deputy Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), Manika Das Dutta, along with local councillor Ratna Dutta, visited the site to assess the damage and meet with affected shopkeepers.

Speaking to reporters at the site, the Deputy Mayor assured the victims of government support. “We spoke to the affected shopkeepers and assured them of government assistance. Although the cause of the fire is still unknown, I urge all vendors to ensure their shops are properly insured to protect against such disasters,” she said.

The visit by AMC officials and their assurance of aid has brought some relief to the traders, who now look forward to rebuilding their livelihoods. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the incident to determine the origin of the fire.

Emergency response teams and fire personnel acted promptly to control the blaze, preventing it from spreading further in the densely packed market area. Meanwhile, the municipal corporation is coordinating with disaster management and relief departments to ensure support reaches those affected.

This incident has once again highlighted the need for enhanced fire safety measures and disaster preparedness in crowded marketplaces across the state.
