Imphal, June 9 — A delegation of 25 MLAs from various political parties in Manipur met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Sunday, urging him to intervene and help find an amicable solution to the ongoing ethnic crisis in the state. The legislators expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation and appealed for urgent steps to restore peace and normalcy.

According to a Raj Bhavan official, the MLAs briefed the Governor on the ground situation and requested his active involvement in resolving the crisis. In response, Governor Bhalla assured them that all necessary measures were being taken to address public concerns and stabilize the situation.

Following the meeting with the legislators, the Governor chaired a high-level security review at Raj Bhavan. Key officials present included Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, DGP Rajiv Singh, Home Commissioner N. Ashok Kumar, ADG (Law & Order), IG of Assam Rifles (South), IG CRPF, and other senior administrative and security officers. The meeting focused on assessing the present situation and discussing strategies for de-escalation.

The fresh unrest stems from the recent arrest of Kanan Singh and four other members of the radical Meitei group, Arambai Tenggol, by central security forces. Their detention triggered widespread protests across Imphal East and Imphal West districts. Demonstrators torched vehicles, blocked roads with burning tyres and furniture, and even threatened self-immolation in symbolic protest. At least 10 people, including a journalist, were injured during clashes.

In response, the state government has imposed an indefinite curfew in five valley districts—Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching—and suspended mobile internet and data services for five days to contain the unrest. Security forces remain heavily deployed to maintain order.
