Mumbai, Nov 24 — Veteran Bollywood icon Dharmendra, aged 89, has passed away, sources close to IANS confirmed, marking the end of a towering cinematic legacy that spanned more than six decades.

The actor had been discharged from Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on November 12 after a period of critical illness. At the time, Dr. Rajiv Sharma informed IANS that the star left the hospital “fully satisfied” with his treatment and was recovering at home under close family care. He urged the public not to believe false rumours and to pray for Dharmendra’s recovery so he could “celebrate his next birthday with pride.”

Despite earlier updates of improvement, Dharmendra’s health had remained fragile. He was admitted on November 10 in critical condition and placed on life support, and sources had indicated that he was under strict medical observation since October 31. Dharmendra would have turned 90 on December 8.

A legendary figure in Hindi cinema, Dharmendra was celebrated as one of the most handsome, versatile, and successful actors in Indian film history. With over 300 films to his credit, he held the record for starring in the highest number of hit films. His illustrious career began with his 1960 debut in Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere.

He rose to prominence with hits like Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Phool Aur Patthar, and Aaye Din Bahar Ke, and went on to deliver iconic performances in classics such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Seeta Aur Geeta, Dharam Veer, and The Burning Train.

In later years, he impressed audiences with notable roles in Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Life in a… Metro, Apne, Johnny Gaddaar, Yamla Pagla Deewana, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. His last appearance was in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024).

Dharmendra was set to feature in Sriram Raghavan’s upcoming war drama Ikkis, based on Arun Khetarpal’s life.

Honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2012, Dharmendra leaves behind a legacy unmatched in Indian cinema, immortalized through generations of unforgettable performances.
