Kochi, Nov 24 — Notorious burglar Devendra Singh, popularly known as Bunty Chor, was released from police custody on Monday evening after being detained overnight at the Ernakulam South Railway Station. His detention came after police grew suspicious of his presence and behaviour inside the station’s waiting room late Sunday night.

According to the Ernakulam South Railway Police, CCTV footage confirmed Bunty’s prolonged stay at the station. Officers reportedly found inconsistencies in his initial statements during questioning, prompting them to take him into preventive custody for verification.

However, after detailed interrogation, police concluded that Bunty exhibited no signs of suspicious activity or criminal intent. He explained to officers that he had travelled to Kochi to meet Advocate B.A. Aloor, who, he claimed, was representing him in a High Court matter concerning the return of personal belongings—cash and wristwatches—allegedly seized during his previous incarceration.

Bunty told police that upon arriving in Ernakulam, he learned that Advocate Aloor had passed away earlier this year. Unable to decide his next steps, he remained at the station before being detained by police.

Following his release on Monday evening, Bunty reportedly visited Aloor’s office to seek further legal guidance regarding the High Court order he mentioned. Police also confirmed that there are currently no active criminal cases or pending warrants against him in Kerala.

Bunty Chor, once notorious for executing high-profile burglaries and bypassing advanced security systems, had gained national attention nearly a decade ago for his daring thefts. His brief detention in Kochi sparked considerable public interest due to his infamy.

Police officials stated that he was released only after thorough verification ensured his visit to Kochi was linked solely to legal matters and that no unlawful activity was involved.
