Agartala, Nov 25 — The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee will observe Constitution Day across the state on Wednesday, party spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty announced, while strongly criticising the RSS-BJP establishment for allegedly attempting to weaken the foundational principles of the Indian Constitution.

In a press statement, Chakraborty said the Constitution of India—shaped by the nation’s pluralistic heritage and inspired by the vision of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and architected under the leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar—remains the cornerstone safeguarding democracy, equality, and social justice. He urged citizens to unite in defence of the Constitution amid growing concerns over threats to democratic institutions.

Chakraborty alleged that the RSS and its affiliated organisations had historically opposed the Constitution, even burning copies after its adoption in 1949, and continue to challenge its core values—particularly secularism and socialism. He further claimed that successive BJP-led governments have eroded protections for workers, farmers, minorities, Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs, and economically weaker sections while politicizing key constitutional institutions and curbing dissent.

Highlighting current political developments, Chakraborty warned that proposals such as “One Nation, One Election” and changes to the Election Commission’s appointment procedure indicate an effort to centralize power and pave the way for what he termed “one-party rule.” He also accused the government of favouring corporate interests at the cost of ordinary citizens.

The Congress will mark Constitution Day with statewide programmes aimed at raising public awareness about alleged threats to democratic rights. Chakraborty specifically criticized attempts to “dilute voting rights,” including through systems like the SIR mechanism. He called upon citizens to join a broader movement to protect constitutional values and uphold India’s democratic framework.
