In a remarkable medical breakthrough, a 43-day-old newborn from Amarpur has successfully undergone surgery for a congenital branchial cyst—an achievement believed to be the first of its kind in India for an infant this young. The condition, which had been detected when the mother was six months pregnant, required careful monitoring and expert surgical handling due to the age and fragility of the child.

The baby, born to Amarpur Malbasa residents Uttam Kumar Jamatia and Khafuti Tripura, arrived on October 13 at the Amarpur Government Hospital through a normal delivery. Although the birth was smooth, the parents were already aware of the congenital cyst from their antenatal scans. Branchial cysts, while generally benign, can pose serious risks depending on their growth, size, and proximity to vital structures in the neck.

Following the delivery, doctors at the hospital referred the newborn to renowned paediatric surgeon Dr. Aniruddha Basak for specialised evaluation. When the baby was just 17 days old, Dr. Basak recommended a series of diagnostic tests to determine the severity of the condition. During this period, the cyst began to enlarge at an unusual and alarming rate, leaving the parents deeply worried and prompting an urgent return to the specialist with the test results.

The infant was admitted on November 21, and after thorough assessment, stabilisation, and preparation, the surgical team scheduled the operation for November 25. The delicate procedure lasted two hours and was carried out with precision, resulting in a successful outcome without any complications—an extraordinary feat considering the age of the patient and the technical challenges involved.

Reflecting on the case, Dr. Basak highlighted the immense difficulty of performing such a procedure on a 43-day-old infant. He noted that, based on available medical records and professional knowledge, no child younger than eight months had previously undergone surgery for the same condition anywhere in India. He emphasised that this successful operation marks the first known instance of a branchial cyst being surgically removed from an infant this young in the country.

The achievement stands as a significant milestone in paediatric surgical care in Tripura and across India, demonstrating both advanced medical capability and the commitment of healthcare professionals to ensuring timely and expert treatment for even the youngest patients.
