Agartala, April 9: The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to undertake a major renovation project for the historic pond located in the Madhyapara area, responding to long-standing demands from local residents as well as directives from the state leadership. The initiative is part of AMC’s broader effort to restore and preserve important water bodies across the city.
On Thursday, Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumdar, along with Corporator Ratna Dutta, Municipal Commissioner Saju Vaheed A., and other senior officials, conducted a site visit to assess the current condition of the pond. During the inspection, the team reviewed the extent of degradation and discussed the scope of restoration work required.
Speaking to reporters, Mayor Majumdar highlighted the historical and environmental significance of the Madhyapara pond, describing it as a vital water resource that once served the local community. He noted that over time, neglect and lack of maintenance had led to its deterioration, making restoration both necessary and urgent.
The Mayor further stated that AMC has been consistently working in recent years to clean, rejuvenate, and beautify neglected water bodies throughout Agartala. The upcoming renovation of the Madhyapara pond is aligned with these ongoing efforts and reflects the civic body’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
Importantly, the project has also been taken up following repeated appeals from residents, who have long demanded the revival of the pond. Additionally, a request from Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has added impetus to the initiative, ensuring swift administrative action.
Majumdar also addressed the issue of illegal encroachments around the pond, noting that parts of the surrounding land had been occupied over the years. He assured that necessary steps would be taken to remove these encroachments in a timely manner, enabling unhindered restoration work.
Once completed, the project aims to make the pond functional again, improve the local environment, and provide a clean and accessible space for residents. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance both ecological balance and community well-being in the Madhyapara area.
