Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who arrived in Tripura on Thursday on an official visit, paid homage at the revered Tripura Sundari Temple in Udaipur before holding a courtesy meeting with Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha later in the evening. The meeting took place at Dr. Saha’s official residence, where the two leaders exchanged views on several issues of mutual interest and inter-state cooperation.

Following the meeting, Dr. Manik Saha took to social media to express his appreciation, stating that he was “deeply touched and immensely honoured” to host Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma at his official residence. The interaction reflected the cordial relations between the two neighboring states.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Dr. Saha revealed that a key focus of their discussion was the widening of the Assam–Agartala road at Churaibari, an important corridor connecting Tripura with Assam. He pointed out that increasing traffic congestion in the area has become a major concern for commuters and transporters. Both leaders agreed that widening the road on both sides would significantly improve connectivity, ease traffic movement, and support economic activities between the two states.

Another major issue discussed was power cooperation. Dr. Saha said that both Tripura and Assam currently have surplus electricity. While Tripura is already exporting power to Bangladesh, Assam has shown interest in supplying its excess power to Tripura. He noted that the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangladesh for power export is set to expire in March 2026, though it may be extended. Future arrangements regarding power import or export between Assam and Tripura will be decided keeping these developments in mind.

In addition to these matters, the two Chief Ministers also discussed general developmental issues, governance, and the overall well-being of the people. They acknowledged that both states are governed by “double-engine governments,” which has helped accelerate development. Elections in Assam also came up during the conversation.

Clarifying political speculation, Dr. Saha stated that the forthcoming ADC elections in Tripura were not discussed during the meeting.
