Agartala, Aug 8 — In a major anti-narcotics operation, police seized 90,000 Yaba tablets from an auto driver at the Agartala by-pass road on Thursday. The seizure, valued at approximately ₹1.25 crore in the black market, was confirmed by newly appointed Superintendent of Police, West Tripura, Namit Pathak.

Briefing the media at Amtali Police Station, SP Pathak said the contraband was recovered during a routine police operation. “A three-wheeler was signalled to stop by our personnel on the by-pass road. The driver, identified as Subir Sutradhar, ignored the signal and attempted to flee. Our team chased the vehicle and intercepted it near a roadside dhaba,” Pathak stated.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the narcotics, which had been concealed inside. SP Pathak added that such a significant seizure is not unprecedented in Amtali’s jurisdiction, highlighting the area’s vulnerability to narcotics smuggling.

He commended the swift and coordinated efforts of the Amtali police in curbing the trafficking of illegal substances, reaffirming the department’s commitment to cracking down on the drug trade.

However, local sources presented a different version of events, claiming that residents of the area first intercepted the auto-rickshaw and then informed the police, leading to the seizure.

Yaba tablets, a combination of methamphetamine and caffeine, are known for their addictive and harmful effects and have become a growing concern in the region due to trafficking routes passing through Tripura.

Police have registered a case against the accused, who remains in custody. Further investigation is underway to identify the source of the contraband and any potential links to larger trafficking networks.
