Agartala, Dec 19 — Director General of Tripura Police, Anurag, on Friday said that stronger police–public relations have played a key role in a significant reduction in overall crime and road traffic accident fatalities in the state compared to the previous year. He noted, however, that cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act have increased, reflecting intensified preventive and enforcement measures by the police.

Speaking at a programme organised at R.K. Pur Police Station in Udaipur, the DGP outlined the core responsibilities of the police force and stressed the importance of community participation in fulfilling those duties. “Tripura Police have three major responsibilities — maintaining law and order, preventing crime, and detecting crime once it occurs. To effectively perform all three, cooperation and participation from the community are essential,” Anurag said.

He said the strengthening of police–civilian relations was evident from the large public participation in the event. “The presence of civilians here today shows how trust between the police and the public has grown. I am extremely happy to see that 60 civilians have come forward to donate blood in this mega blood donation camp organised by Tripura Police, along with 30 police personnel,” he added.

Highlighting crime statistics, Anurag said the overall crime rate in Tripura has declined by around 10 per cent compared to last year. “While the total number of cases may appear to have increased, this rise is largely due to NDPS-related cases. The spike in NDPS cases actually indicates that preventive actions and proactive policing against drug trafficking and substance abuse have been significantly strengthened over the past year,” he explained.

The DGP also pointed to notable improvements in road safety across the state. According to him, fatalities due to road traffic accidents (RTAs) have dropped by more than 10 per cent compared to the previous year. “Road safety has been one of our priority areas. We have worked extensively to reduce deaths caused by road accidents and reckless driving,” he said.

Anurag said the police had launched intensive awareness campaigns to curb road accidents. “We conducted large-scale public awareness programmes in schools, markets and other public places to educate people about traffic rules and safe driving practices. As a result, we have seen a tangible reduction in fatalities due to road traffic accidents,” he added.

Apart from policing-related activities, the DGP also took part in a blanket distribution programme at a local orphanage during his visit. Expressing optimism about the future of the children, he said, “I believe all 34 inmates of this orphanage will grow up to become responsible citizens of society in the near future.”

The DGP reiterated Tripura Police’s commitment to people-centric policing and said efforts would continue to further strengthen public trust, improve safety and ensure a secure environment across the state.
