Agartala, December 21:
CPI(M) politburo member and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Sunday alleged that the ruling allies, the BJP and TIPRA Motha, have turned desperate to wrest control of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) to secure what he described as a “fair share” in an organised loot currently underway in the autonomous body.
Speaking to media persons, Chaudhury said both the BJP and TIPRA Motha are partners in the ruling coalition in the state. He alleged that the BJP was reluctant to conduct TTAADC elections but was compelled to do so due to constitutional provisions, with polls scheduled to be held by April 2026. According to him, TIPRA Motha has been in power in the ADC for the past five years, and as the elections approach, the BJP has become increasingly desperate to take control of the Sixth Schedule body.
Chaudhury claimed that the growing rivalry between the two ruling allies has resulted in rising political tension and violence. He alleged that a minister from the ruling dispensation publicly threatened to “peel the skin” off TIPRA Motha workers from an open मंच, while TIPRA Motha activists were reportedly involved in around 13 to 14 incidents of arson and attacks on political opponents. These developments, he said, reflect the intense struggle between the two parties.
“All these incidents are taking place because both the BJP and TIPRA Motha want a share in the organised loot that is allegedly being carried out in the ADC administration,” the CPI(M) leader claimed, accusing the ruling parties of misusing the autonomous council for personal and political gains.
Chaudhury said the CPI(M) would soon finalise its political strategy for the upcoming TTAADC elections. He informed that a two-day-long state committee meeting of the party commenced on Sunday, which is held at intervals of two to three months.
“During this meeting, we will comprehensively discuss the prevailing political situation in the state and the country, as well as our organisational and electoral strategy,” he added, indicating that the CPI(M) is preparing to take on both ruling allies in the forthcoming polls.
