The Dharmanagar Assembly constituency is gearing up for one of Tripura’s most closely watched by-elections, where legacy, loyalty, and political resurgence have converged to shape a high-stakes triangular contest. With the BJP, CPI(M), and Congress announcing their candidates, the electoral battle has intensified, drawing widespread public attention.

The by-election was necessitated by the passing of veteran leader Biswa Bandhu Sen, whose absence has created a significant void in the constituency’s political landscape. For many voters, the contest is not only about choosing a representative but also about identifying a leader capable of carrying forward his legacy.

The BJP has fielded Jahar Chakraborty, a seasoned party worker known for his long-standing loyalty and grassroots connect. His candidature is being seen as recognition of dedication and perseverance, particularly during the years of Left dominance. His association with late Rasik Ranjan Goswami also adds symbolic significance to his campaign.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) has nominated Amitabha Dutta, who has focused his campaign on promises of development and governance reforms. The Congress, seeking to regain lost ground, has put forward Chayan Bhattacharjee, aiming to reconnect with voters and re-establish its presence in the region.

Dharmanagar, known for its politically aware and socially diverse electorate, is considered a prestigious seat in Tripura politics. While the BJP’s choice of a veteran candidate may give it an early advantage, both CPI(M) and Congress view the by-poll as a crucial opportunity to challenge the ruling party’s dominance.

As campaigning gains momentum, discussions around the election are dominating public spaces and social platforms. With emotional undercurrents linked to legacy and rising expectations of development, the Dharmanagar by-election is poised to become a defining political contest, testing not just electoral strength but the future trajectory of Tripura’s political landscape.
