Agartala, May 25: A political controversy erupted on Sunday after District Magistrate of Gomati, Tarit Kanti Chakma, reportedly refused to meet Tipra Motha Party founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman. The incident occurred when Debbarman arrived at the DM’s official residence with the intention of discussing public issues affecting Ampi and surrounding areas under the district’s jurisdiction.
According to Debbarman, the meeting was meant to bring urgent matters of public interest to the DM’s attention. However, despite his visit to the official residence, he was denied an audience and had to return without being heard.
Speaking to the media outside the DM’s residence, a visibly disappointed Debbarman said, “I came here to meet the District Magistrate of Gomati. I had some issues to discuss with him. However, he refused to meet. If he doesn’t wish to meet me, I have nothing to do.”
He further expressed his frustration by affirming his role as a public representative, stressing that he had approached the district administration not for personal reasons, but to advocate for people’s concerns.
The refusal to meet a prominent political leader has drawn reactions from various quarters. Supporters of Tipra Motha have criticized the move, alleging a lack of respect for democratic processes and dialogue. Many view the incident as indicative of a widening communication gap between the bureaucracy and political leadership.
As of now, no official response has been issued by the DM or the district administration regarding the incident.
The episode has sparked debates across political circles in Tripura, with many questioning the appropriateness of the DM’s decision and calling for greater administrative accountability when it comes to addressing the concerns of elected or political representatives.
