Chandigarh, July 11: The Cyber Cell of Chandigarh Police has registered an FIR against unknown persons on a complaint by Punjab Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, who accused Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) functionaries of circulating a doctored video to defame him.
The FIR includes charges of forgery, defamation, and criminal conspiracy. Bajwa alleged that the video distorted his remarks about the Punjab Vigilance Bureau’s alleged misconduct during a raid at the residence of MLA Ganieve Kaur, wife of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia.
According to Bajwa, his original video posted on June 25 criticized the mistreatment of a woman legislator. However, he claimed the video was edited to omit references to Ganieve Kaur and falsely portray him as defending Majithia, who is under investigation for alleged laundering of ₹540 crore in drug-related funds.
The Congress leader named Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema as one of those who shared the altered video on Facebook. He also called out AAP Punjab chief and minister Aman Arora, holding him accountable for the clip’s appearance on the party’s official social media page.
In his complaint, Bajwa also named Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, alleging they were part of a deliberate attempt to malign his public image.
Reacting to the FIR, Minister Harpal Cheema dismissed the allegations, stating, “We are not afraid of any FIR. Bajwa’s BJP connection is now clear, which is how he managed to get the FIR registered in a centrally governed Union Territory.”
The police investigation is ongoing to identify those responsible for editing and distributing the video across social media platforms.
