Agartala, December 19 — Amid heightened tensions and evolving developments in neighbouring Bangladesh, senior officials of the Indian Army, Assam Rifles and the Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday conducted a high-level visit to the Indo-Bangladesh international border in the Belonia subdivision of Tripura’s South District to assess the prevailing security situation and operational preparedness.
According to an official post shared by the Eastern Command of the Indian Army on its social media handle, Lieutenant General R.C. Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Eastern Command, accompanied by senior military officers, visited a Border Outpost in the Belonia sector. The visit focused on reviewing ground-level security arrangements along one of the vulnerable stretches of the international border.
During the inspection, Lt Gen Tiwari interacted with troops deployed in forward areas and reviewed their readiness to respond to any emerging security challenges. He assessed surveillance measures, coordination among different security agencies, and the overall operational posture maintained along the border. The Army Commander also took stock of logistical preparedness and troop morale.
Lt Gen Tiwari lauded the personnel of the Indian Army, Assam Rifles and BSF for maintaining a high level of vigilance and professionalism despite challenging terrain and operational conditions. “Army Cdr EC lauded all ranks for their dedication and preparedness in safeguarding the nation’s borders,” the Eastern Command said in its official statement, highlighting the confidence of the top leadership in the troops deployed along the frontier.
The visit has assumed added significance in view of recent political and security developments in Bangladesh, including reports of unrest and inflammatory remarks by National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah. He had allegedly warned of isolating India’s northeastern region — popularly known as the ‘Seven Sisters’ — and offering shelter to separatist elements accused of attempting to destabilise Bangladesh. Such statements have raised concerns among Indian security agencies, particularly in border states like Tripura.
In response, security forces in Tripura have remained on a high state of alert, with intensified surveillance, patrolling and coordination among the Army, Assam Rifles and BSF. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation across the border to prevent any spillover effect, including infiltration, smuggling or other cross-border activities.
Tripura shares an 856-kilometre-long international border with Bangladesh, a significant portion of which remains unfenced due to difficult terrain and other constraints. This makes the region strategically sensitive and places added responsibility on security forces to maintain strict vigilance.
The high-level visit underscores the Indian Army’s proactive approach and commitment to ensuring border security and regional stability amid a volatile security environment in the neighbourhood.
