Kalyanpur has witnessed a promising example of innovation and self-reliance as a young tribal farmer, Samar Debbarma, successfully ventured into polyhouse cultivation of high-quality English cucumbers, also known as hothouse or European cucumbers, with the support of the local Agriculture Department.

Samar, a postgraduate in Sanskrit, hails from RS Para ADC Village under Kalyanpur subdivision. At his ancestral home, he set up a modern polyhouse and has already cultivated more than 200 English cucumber plants using completely organic methods. His fresh and premium-quality produce has started reaching local markets, where it has received positive responses from consumers and traders alike. The initiative has also attracted attention from neighboring areas, inspiring many farmers to explore similar scientific farming practices.

The Kalyanpur Agriculture Department played a crucial role in Samar’s success. From the construction of the polyhouse to the supply of quality seeds and other essential agricultural inputs, the department extended comprehensive support. Officials stated that Samar’s achievement reflects the department’s commitment to encouraging progressive farmers, especially those who approach them with innovative ideas and a willingness to adopt modern techniques.

Speaking to reporters, Samar shared his vision for the future. He expressed a strong desire to expand his farming venture and introduce more such initiatives in the region. “I want to prove that educated youth can take the lead in agriculture and move towards self-reliance by adopting scientific and sustainable practices,” he said, adding that he is happy his work has motivated others in the community.

Debraj Barman, Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer of Kalyanpur, lauded Samar’s efforts and success. He remarked that scientific polyhouse cultivation of improved cucumber varieties can significantly enhance farmers’ income and help them achieve self-sufficiency. He further assured that the Agriculture Department is fully prepared to support any farmer willing to adopt similar innovative and modern farming practices.
