Agartala: August 17: Khowai district’s newly appointed District Education Officer (DEO) has launched a strict drive to restore accountability in schools, taking action against both teaching and non-teaching staff found guilty of negligence.

During a recent inspection at Garobari SB School under Shantirbazar Gram Panchayat, the DEO discovered that a teacher had been absent for 10 consecutive days without permission. A show-cause notice was immediately issued. In the same school, a Group-D staff member was found to have skipped duty for nearly five months without sanctioned leave, leading to the suspension of salary.

Further checks at Officetilla High School and Purnima High School revealed irregularities in the schools’ cash books, raising questions about financial management. The officer has directed corrective measures in this regard.

Meanwhile, despite the state government’s strict ban on private tuition by government teachers, allegations of violations continue. In one inquiry, a teacher was reportedly caught red-handed conducting private tuition at his residence. The DEO has warned of stringent disciplinary action against such practices.

The officer’s proactive steps reflect a strong stance on restoring discipline and work culture in the district’s education system. However, concerns remain about the sustainability of such efforts. Past initiatives by previous officers failed to bring lasting change, with allegations that the Khowai District Education Office has long been influenced by an unofficial employees’ association backed by the ruling party.

According to reports, successive officers struggled to overcome entrenched mismanagement and absenteeism. The new DEO’s actions have sent a strong message, but whether these reforms will have a long-term impact remains to be seen.
