Dharmanagar, April 9: The bye-election to the 56-Dharmanagar Assembly Constituency began on a steady but relatively slow note, with an average voter turnout of 15.63 percent recorded till 9:00 AM, according to initial reports from election authorities.
Polling commenced early in the morning under tight security arrangements, with voters gradually arriving at polling stations across the constituency. Despite the peaceful atmosphere and adequate deployment of security personnel, the turnout during the first two hours remained modest.
Election officials indicated that the initial hours often witness lower participation, with numbers expected to rise as the day progresses. Special arrangements have been made to ensure smooth voting, including separate queues for senior citizens, women, and persons with disabilities. Polling staff were seen assisting voters and ensuring that COVID-appropriate behavior and other guidelines are followed where necessary.
The by-election has garnered significant political attention, with multiple candidates in the fray and key issues influencing voter sentiment. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure free, fair, and transparent polling throughout the day.
Voters are being encouraged to come out in larger numbers and exercise their democratic rights. With several hours of polling still remaining, officials remain optimistic that the turnout percentage will improve significantly by the end of the day.
Further updates on voter turnout and polling trends are expected as the election progresses.
