A newly constructed Rural Market (Grameen Haat) near Kanchanbari Bazaar was officially inaugurated on Friday by State Scheduled Caste Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das, marking a significant milestone in the region’s efforts to strengthen local trade and agricultural development.

The project has been developed with financial support from NABARD and under the supervision of the Kanchanbari Samaj Kalyan Cooperative Society. The new market complex has been designed to provide farmers and local producers with a structured, accessible, and farmer-friendly trading platform, addressing long-standing challenges related to the sale and distribution of agricultural goods.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister Das underscored the crucial role of the Grameen Haat in empowering the farming community. He noted that the new facility would create better opportunities for farmers to directly sell their produce without depending heavily on middlemen. This, he said, would ensure fair pricing, transparency in transactions, and improved income for cultivators. By connecting farmers directly with consumers, the market is set to bridge gaps within the local supply chain and promote healthier market practices.

Minister Das further highlighted that the establishment of such rural markets is a vital step toward strengthening the agricultural foundation of Tripura. He emphasized that markets like the Grameen Haat not only uplift individual farmers but also contribute to the broader rural economy by creating employment opportunities, fostering entrepreneurship, and improving market accessibility for remote villages.

The minister expressed optimism that the new marketplace would significantly benefit farmers engaged in cultivating fruits, vegetables, spices, and other local produce. With a designated space to display and sell their goods, farmers will now have better control over pricing and demand. The Grameen Haat is also expected to attract regular buyers, traders, and vendors, thus creating a vibrant ecosystem of rural commerce.

Local residents and representatives of the Kanchanbari Samaj Kalyan Cooperative Society attended the programme and welcomed the initiative as a progressive step for the region. They noted that the market would help reduce the hardships faced by farmers who previously struggled with limited trading spaces and inconsistent market access.

With the inauguration of the Grameen Haat, the region now moves toward a more structured and economically sustainable rural trading system—one that promises long-term growth, improved livelihoods, and a stronger connection between producers and consumers.
