Agartala, October 4: An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 jolted Tripura's Dhalai district shortly after midnight on Sunday, triggering brief concern among residents, though there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property, officials said.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremor occurred at 12:57:38 am and had its epicentre at latitude 23.757 degrees North and longitude 91.995 degrees East.
The earthquake originated at a depth of 30 kilometres beneath the Earth's surface, the NCS said in an update shared through its official X account.
The tremor was felt in parts of Dhalai district, with residents reporting brief shaking. However, authorities said there were no immediate reports of injuries, structural damage or disruption to essential services following the earthquake.
The district administration and other concerned agencies are monitoring the situation and assessing whether the tremor had any impact in remote areas, officials said.
Residents were advised to remain alert and follow basic safety precautions in the event of further tremors or aftershocks.
The earthquake comes amid continued seismic activity reported from the northeastern region, which is considered one of India's seismically active zones because of its geological setting.
The NCS, India's nodal agency for earthquake monitoring, tracks seismic activity across the country and neighbouring regions and issues alerts and technical information on earthquakes detected by its network.
There was no immediate indication of significant damage from Sunday's tremor, officials said.
The relatively shallow-to-moderate depth of the quake meant that the tremor could be felt in nearby areas, although its magnitude was not considered strong enough to cause widespread damage.
Residents in affected areas expressed relief after the tremor subsided without any major incident.
Authorities have asked people not to panic and to rely on official information rather than unverified reports circulating on social media.
Officials said further information would be shared if any damage or other impact was reported during subsequent assessments.
Tripura and other northeastern states have experienced earthquakes of varying intensity over the years, making preparedness and public awareness important in the region.
The administration has urged residents to remain cautious while continuing to monitor developments related to the latest tremor.
