Agartala, October 1: Resident doctors at the Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital here staged a sit-in protest outside the Principal’s office on Wednesday, demanding immediate steps to strengthen security and protect the dignity and professional rights of doctors and healthcare workers.

The protest by the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) followed an incident involving a senior resident doctor at the Medicine OPD, which the association said had raised concerns over the safety and privacy of medical professionals at the hospital.

A group of resident doctors gathered outside the Principal’s office from the morning, holding placards and raising slogans in support of their demands.

The RDA has submitted a five-point memorandum to the college administration, seeking prompt action on the issues raised by the doctors.

One of the key demands is the removal of videos related to the incident that are circulating on social media. The association has sought deletion of such videos, correction of what it termed misinformation and a public apology, besides measures to prevent unauthorised circulation of similar content in the future.

The doctors also objected to what they described as a unilateral “media trial”, maintaining that no public judgment or administrative decision should be taken without first hearing the concerned doctor’s version of events.

The association has further demanded a ban on unauthorised photography and videography inside hospital premises, including wards, OPDs and patient service areas. It said such restrictions were necessary to protect the privacy and safety of patients, doctors and other healthcare workers.

Another demand is that the Medical Superintendent initiate legal proceedings, including filing of an FIR, against persons whom the association alleged had made false accusations against the doctor.

The RDA has also sought replacement of SIS security guards with Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel and called for stronger security arrangements at the hospital.

The association said its protest was not confined to the recent incident but reflected wider concerns over the safety and dignity of medical professionals.

It maintained that doctors require a secure and respectful workplace to discharge their responsibilities effectively and ensure proper patient care.

Speaking to reporters, an agitating doctor said the protest would continue until “concrete steps” were taken by the authorities.

The RDA urged the administration to act swiftly on its demands and ensure a safe and dignified working environment for doctors and other healthcare personnel.
