Agartala: Mar 02: Social media was abuzz on Sunday with congratulatory messages, pictures, and videos of former BJP Vice President and rights activist Patal Kanya Jamatia’s marriage ceremony. The event took place at her ancestral home in Wathwi Lwng Kami, Duski, under the Teliamura subdivision. A reception was later held in Moharpara, also in Teliamura subdivision.
Sources close to Jamatia revealed that her groom, BP Meena, is a central government employee currently posted in Tripura. “BP Meena works with the MSME department, and through joint workshops organized by the Tripura Rehabilitation Plantation Corporation and the MSME department, they got to know each other,” a source shared.
The marriage ceremony was unique in many ways. Despite being a practicing Christian, Jamatia chose to have her wedding according to the traditional Jamtia and Hindu rituals. The groom applied vermilion on the bride’s forehead, a customary Hindu practice. In a remarkable twist, a portrait of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was placed at the ritual site, symbolizing Jamatia’s strong stand for the rights of people, particularly tribal rights.
The entire ceremony was live-streamed on YouTube, with the theme “UNITED IN LIFE, TOGETHER FOREVER” capturing the essence of the event. Only a select group of close family and friends were invited to attend.
Jamatia, known as one of the strongest tribal voices in Tripura, has been an active campaigner for the implementation of NRC in the state. She briefly served as the Vice President of BJP and contested the 2023 elections unsuccessfully. Following that, she was appointed Chairperson of the Tripura Rehabilitation Plantation Corporation (TRPC) with a Minister of State rank.
