Acting on a credible tip-off, police personnel from Pecharthal Police Station intercepted an electronic auto (E-auto) bearing registration number TR 02 CA 163 on Wednesday while it was passing in front of the station. The swift action by the police team led to a significant seizure of illegal substances being transported through the area.
During a thorough search of the vehicle, officers recovered 2 kg 500 grams of dry cannabis concealed inside. The discovery prompted immediate detention of the three individuals who were travelling in the vehicle at the time of interception.
The detained accused have been identified as Anjan Debnath (27), a resident of Machmara Krishnatilla; Rakesh Debnath (29), hailing from Narayanpur; and Monoj Debnath (27), also from Narayanpur. Police sources said the trio was unable to provide any valid explanation for carrying the contraband, leading to their arrest on the spot.
Following the recovery, police registered a case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The seized cannabis was taken into custody as evidence, and the E-auto used for transportation has also been impounded for further investigation.
According to officials, preliminary interrogation of the accused is underway to ascertain the source of the contraband and identify any larger network involved in the illegal trade. Police are also probing whether the trio had previous involvement in similar activities or if this was part of a more organised supply chain operating in the region.
The detainees are presently under police custody and will be produced before the district court on Thursday. Police officials affirmed that strict action will be taken as part of their continuing efforts to curb the trafficking of narcotics in the area.
