Tripura Pradesh Congress Spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty, in a press conference held on Friday at the State Congress headquarters in Agartala, launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led central government, accusing it of pursuing policies that weaken democratic institutions and disregard public welfare. He alleged that since 2014, the Modi-Shah administration has depended heavily on propaganda, religious polarization, and corporate-backed politics to retain power, while masking economic shortcomings with “inflated and misleading” growth projections.

Citing official data, Chakraborty claimed that more than 2.04 lakh companies have shut down in the past five years, leaving millions unemployed, even as fake shell companies continue to flourish without regulatory checks. He pointed out that industrial production has dropped significantly and electricity generation has contracted by 6.9 percent. Declining consumer demand, he said, contradicts the Centre’s narrative of an 8.2 percent GDP growth rate and exposes the widening economic distress across sectors.

Expressing deep concern over the newly introduced Seed Bill 2025 and Electricity Bill 2025, Chakraborty warned that these legislations—combined with broader privatization drives—would severely impact farmers and ordinary citizens. The Seed Bill, he argued, threatens farmers’ autonomy by tightening corporate control over seeds, while the Electricity Bill risks higher power tariffs and reduced access for low-income households. Such policies, he said, endanger the livelihoods and future of workers, farmers, youth, and marginalized communities.

Announcing the party’s next steps, Chakraborty stated that the Tripura Congress will join the nationwide agitation against what it calls “anti-people and pro-corporate” bills. As part of this movement, the party will organize a statewide protest rally in Agartala on December 8, during which activists will symbolically burn copies of the Seed and Electricity Bill drafts. The protest aims to demand immediate withdrawal of the bills and resist moves to privatize critical national assets.
