Agartala, July 14 — In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through the residents of Kali Bazar Anganwadi area under the Bamutia police outpost in Lefunga, Tripura, a man has confessed to murdering his wife after a prolonged period of domestic conflict, allegedly driven by alcohol-related issues.

On July 10, the body of Gopa Bhil, a housewife, was found under suspicious circumstances inside her home. Local police, including SDPO Mohanpur Sabyasachi Debnath and Lefunga Police Station OC Sahadeb Das, arrived promptly at the scene, and the body was sent for a post-mortem to confirm the cause of death.

In a shocking turn of events, the victim’s husband, Biswajit Biswas, surrendered at Lefunga police station and admitted to strangling his wife. On Monday, police conducted a crime scene reconstruction where Biswas demonstrated how he committed the murder. The reconstruction was attended by OC Sahadeb Das, Second Officer Sudip Jamatia, Investigating Officer Ajit Jamatia, and personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR).

Local sources revealed that the couple had a troubled marriage, allegedly worsened by alcohol dependency. Gopa Bhil was reportedly addicted to alcohol, and it is believed that this contributed both to their union and its tragic breakdown. Biswas, who made a modest living by selling ice cream, was reportedly struggling to manage both financial pressures and the deteriorating home environment.

The incident has triggered widespread anger and sorrow in the local community, with residents calling for justice and highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness and intervention in cases of domestic abuse and substance dependency.

Police investigations are ongoing, and Biswas remains in custody. Further details will emerge following the completion of the post-mortem and official inquiry.
