A significant proposal highlighting alleged disparities in hostel meal allowances for minority students has been raised in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, drawing attention to issues of equity in student welfare.

The matter was brought forward by Boxanagar MLA Tofazzal Hossain, who pointed out that students belonging to Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Scheduled Castes (SC) receive Rs 100 per day for food expenses in hostels, while Muslim minority students are allotted only Rs 65 per day.

Describing the situation as “unjust and discriminatory,” Hossain argued that students residing in the same state and studying under similar conditions should not face disparities in essential provisions such as food. He emphasized that such inequality could adversely affect the well-being and academic performance of minority students.

The MLA urged the state government to take immediate steps to revise the allowance for minority students, proposing an increase to at least Rs 80 per day. In addition, he called for enhanced stipends and a complete waiver of hostel fees to provide greater financial relief to students from economically weaker minority communities.

The proposal, which is scheduled to be taken up for discussion in the Assembly on March 23, is expected to trigger a broader debate on inclusive policies and equal access to educational support.

Hossain also criticized previous administrations, particularly the Left Front government, alleging that the issue had remained unaddressed for over 25 years. He stressed that corrective action is long overdue.

If implemented, the proposal could benefit a large number of minority students across the state, easing their financial burden and supporting their educational pursuits.

The upcoming Assembly hearing is now being closely watched, as the government’s response will be crucial in determining whether the demand for parity in hostel allowances gains momentum.
