Tripura has reached a significant milestone in rural development, with the state nearly achieving its targets under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G). Officials describe the accomplishment as more than a numerical success, highlighting it as a transformative shift in the quality of life across rural communities.

Under Phases I and II of the scheme, Tripura was assigned a target of constructing 3,76,913 houses. According to the latest data, the state has recorded 3,76,194 registrations and 3,76,187 sanctions, while 3,73,908 houses have already been completed. This translates to an impressive achievement rate of nearly 99 percent, placing Tripura among the top-performing states in the country.

Financial support from the Central government has played a crucial role in this progress. A total of ₹4,859.64 crore has been released to facilitate construction, ensuring that beneficiaries receive timely instalments and assistance. The efficient flow of funds, combined with streamlined administrative processes, has enabled the state to maintain steady progress.

A key highlight of Tripura’s performance is the uniformity of implementation across districts. Dhalai district leads in terms of completed houses, reporting 54,362 units. Districts such as Gomati, South Tripura, and West Tripura have also demonstrated strong performance, with completion figures closely matching the number of sanctioned houses. Even relatively smaller districts like Unakoti and Khowai have maintained pace, contributing to the state’s balanced and consistent progress.

The monitoring framework of PMAY-G in Tripura has also been notably effective. Over 3.70 lakh beneficiaries have received assistance up to the third instalment, while more than 3.72 lakh houses have been verified as completed. This reflects both strong administrative oversight and active participation from beneficiaries, ensuring that projects are completed on time and to the required standards.

At the national level, PMAY-G remains one of the largest rural housing initiatives, with around 4.15 crore houses sanctioned and nearly 3 crore completed so far. Launched in 2016, the programme aims to provide pucca houses equipped with basic amenities by 2029, in convergence with schemes such as Swachh Bharat Mission, Jal Jeevan Mission, and Ujjwala Yojana.

Tripura’s near-complete achievement is increasingly being viewed as a model for effective implementation. Beyond meeting targets, the initiative has significantly improved living conditions, providing families with safer housing, sanitation, clean drinking water, and access to clean cooking fuel—bringing the vision of “Housing for All” closer to reality.
