Agartala, June 21, 2025 — In a significant blow to drug trafficking networks, Unakoti district police seized 1,790 bottles of illegal cough syrup from a Guwahati-to-Agartala bound super bus on Saturday afternoon. The operation was carried out near Pecharthal police station following a tip-off from reliable sources.

The naka-point operation was led by SDPO Utpalendu Debnath and Officer-in-Charge Suman Acharya. During the inspection, the team intercepted the bus, which had very few passengers on board and was primarily carrying goods. Upon a detailed search, the illegal consignment was discovered concealed within a specially designed secret chamber of the vehicle.

District Superintendent of Police Sudambika R. visited the Pachartal police station soon after the seizure to oversee further legal procedures. The arrested driver, identified as Bapi Das from Agartala, was taken into custody after he failed to produce any valid documentation for the transported goods.

The seized contraband, primarily composed of high-abuse cough syrup, is estimated to have a black market value of around ₹9 lakh, police officials confirmed.

A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and a thorough investigation is now underway to trace the origin and intended recipients of the illegal consignment. Police suspect that the vehicle was being used as a carrier in a larger inter-state drug trafficking network.

Officials have reiterated their commitment to intensifying anti-narcotics efforts across the state, particularly along transit routes frequently exploited by smugglers. This successful operation highlights the vigilance of Tripura Police in curbing the flow of illicit substances into the state.
