Agartala, September 4: A video showing a man flaunting bundles of high-value currency notes inside a car while speaking in Kokborok has gone viral on social media, sparking a fresh political storm in Tripura.

The man has been identified as Raju Jamatia, reportedly a close associate of BJP Bagma constituency Mandal president Amar Jamatia in Gomati district. Following the video’s circulation, opposition parties quickly seized the opportunity to attack the ruling BJP. They shared photographs of Raju Jamatia with several party leaders, alleging that the cash is linked to “massive corruption” within the state’s ruling establishment.

Responding to the controversy, Raju Jamatia released a separate video statement strongly denying the allegations. He clarified that the viral clip and accompanying photos are old, dating back to 2019, and claimed the money was connected to his personal loan and business dealings. He further asserted that he holds no official position in the BJP and has no formal links with Mandal president Amar Jamatia. According to him, the video has been deliberately resurfaced by political opponents in an attempt to malign his image.

The episode has revived memories of a similar scandal from the Left Front regime, when a CPIM party worker in Agartala was photographed lying on a bed surrounded by currency bundles—a case that drew national and international attention at the time.

With rivals trading accusations, the latest incident has once again brought corruption to the forefront of Tripura’s political discourse. While the BJP has not officially commented on the matter, the controversy underscores how viral videos and social media optics continue to play a decisive role in shaping public perception and fueling political battles in the state.
