Khowai, July 31: In a bid to rejuvenate aquatic ecosystems and enhance the livelihoods of local fisherfolk, Tripura’s Department of Fisheries released over 1.84 lakh fish fingerlings into the Khowai River on Thursday. The initiative is part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), supported by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB).

The event was led by Fisheries Supervisor Champa Pal, who highlighted the ecological importance of the release and its long-term economic benefits for the community. She urged residents to refrain from destructive fishing practices, particularly the use of electric current fishing nets, warning that such methods harm fish populations and are punishable under law.

Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma personally participated in releasing the fingerlings, stating, “This release is a step toward improving the income opportunities of our fishermen. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Tripura’s fisheries initiatives aim to uplift our communities and strengthen sustainable livelihoods.”

Prominent BJP leaders from the Krishnapur Assembly Mandal, including Rashid Mia and Gopal Das, were also present at the event.

Officials explained that the introduction of fingerlings into the river will help replenish fish stocks, protect riverine biodiversity, and promote sustainable aquaculture. They emphasized that once these fingerlings mature, they will significantly boost local fish production, thereby improving food security and the economic condition of fishing families.

The Fisheries Department is actively working to expand similar initiatives across other rivers and water bodies in the state, underscoring the government’s commitment to ecological restoration and community development.
