Agartala, Oct 17: At least five police personnel, posted in Manubazar police station in South Tripura district were detained on Thursday in connection to the death of a 26 years old youth in his residence following alleged torture by the police in jail.
The incident took place after the youth identified as Badal Tripura of Kaladepa village was detained by the police of Manubazar police station for allegedly stealing rubber sheets from a godown on October 13 last. Later he was released on the next day on October 14 last.
Ther family of Badal Tripura, who died at his residence on Wednesday last lodged a complaint alleging that Badal died of torture by two policemen and three special police officers.
Following the complaint, at least 5 police personnel posted in Manubazar police station were detained.
Soon after the death of the youth, the agitated locals gheraud the police station on Thursday and demonstrated with the body of Badal Tripura. The locals demanded exemplary punishment of the police personnel who “tortured the arrested person leading to his death.
The incident sparked resentment among the family members, while the leader of opposition Jitendra Choudhury on Thursday reacted sharply into the incident and alleged of deteriorated law and order situation in Tripura.
