Agartala, April 1: Political tensions escalated in Tripura’s Dhalai district on Wednesday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused Tipra Motha supporters of triggering violence that left several security personnel injured and damaged multiple vehicles, just days ahead of the April 12 TTAADC elections.

Clashes reportedly broke out in the West Lambuchhara area of Kamalpur subdivision after Tipra Motha activists staged a road blockade. Security forces, including the police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR), intervened to clear the obstruction, leading to a confrontation that soon turned violent. According to officials, stones and bricks were allegedly hurled at the forces, resulting in injuries to the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, a woman constable, and at least 12 TSR personnel.

The injured were rushed to Bimal Sinha Memorial Hospital in Kamalpur, where they received treatment and were kept under observation. Authorities said the situation remains under close watch.

Tensions further intensified when BJP candidate Ananta Debbarma arrived in the area to campaign in the Halhalli-Asharambari constituency, where the blockade had been enforced. Following the incident, security deployment in the region was significantly increased to prevent further unrest, with additional police and TSR personnel stationed in sensitive areas.

In a related development, another incident of alleged violence was reported from Srirampur Anandabazar along National Highway 208. Vehicles belonging to MLA Manoj Kanti Deb and BJP candidate Ananta Debbarma were reportedly attacked, leaving at least three people injured.

Reacting strongly, Manoj Kanti Deb, a former minister, alleged that BJP workers and supporters were deliberately targeted during election-related activities. He claimed that around five vehicles were vandalised and several party members were assaulted, disrupting campaign efforts in multiple locations.

Deb further stated that the incidents have adversely impacted the election process in the affected areas. He added that the matter has been brought to the attention of the authorities and demanded a thorough investigation into the violence.

The twin incidents have raised serious concerns over law and order in the region. With campaigning intensifying in Tripura’s tribal belt, authorities have stepped up security arrangements to prevent further escalation and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
