Manipur is facing a political crisis as 19 BJP Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in the state are reportedly set to resign tomorrow, signaling a major shift in the political landscape of the northeastern state. The resignations are seen as a response to growing discontent among local politicians and ethnic communities over the handling of the ongoing unrest in the region. The political turmoil has been exacerbated by ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023 between the Meitei and Kuki communities, leaving hundreds dead and thousands displaced.

The BJP-led coalition government in Manipur, which has been in power since 2017, has struggled to maintain control amidst escalating tensions. The party’s leadership has faced criticism for its inability to effectively address the violence, leading to frustration among local legislators, including those within the ruling party. The resignation of the 19 BJP MLAs could weaken the government’s position in the state assembly, where the party currently holds a majority, and pave the way for potential political realignments.

The MLAs’ move is also indicative of a deeper dissatisfaction within the state’s political elite regarding the party’s governance and its approach to ethnic issues. Many of these lawmakers have aligned themselves with various tribal and regional groups that feel marginalized by the state’s policies. If the resignations go ahead, it could lead to significant instability in Manipur’s political environment, with the possibility of new elections or a reshuffling of the ruling coalition.

This development comes at a time when the people of Manipur are calling for greater peace, reconciliation, and the restoration of normalcy. The central government, led by the BJP, faces mounting pressure to address both the humanitarian crisis and the political instability in the state.
