Tripura’s Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma narrowly escaped a serious attack after a group of miscreants allegedly stormed a house and hurled stones at him during a visit to Khowai district on Sunday evening.

The incident took place in the Mungiakami area around 8 pm, when the minister had gone to the residence of a party worker for a courtesy meeting and to attend a small organisational programme. According to preliminary reports, tension escalated shortly after news of his arrival spread across the locality.

Eyewitnesses said a group of individuals, reportedly led by a local resident identified as Balen Debbarma, gathered near the house and began pelting stones and other projectiles. Some attackers were also seen using slingshots, apparently attempting to directly target the minister.

The sudden outbreak of violence caused significant damage to the property. Portions of the tin roofing were damaged, several rooms were vandalised, and at least eight to ten motorcycles parked nearby were reportedly smashed. A vehicle accompanying the minister was also allegedly damaged during the attack.

As the situation rapidly deteriorated, Debbarma, along with his personal security officers, took shelter inside the house. They remained confined for nearly an hour while the mob continued its aggressive actions outside, creating a tense and volatile situation.

Speaking after being rescued, the minister described the incident as a targeted and politically motivated attack. He alleged that attempts were being made to create unrest ahead of the elections. “The assault was aimed at me. In a democratic system, every political party has the right to function. Such violence is unacceptable,” he stated.

Police from Mungiakami Police Station rushed to the spot upon receiving information and managed to bring the situation under control after nearly an hour. Security personnel ensured the safe evacuation of the minister and his associates from the area.

Officials confirmed that Debbarma did not sustain any physical injuries. However, the incident has triggered heightened tension in the locality. Security has since been tightened, and an investigation is currently underway to identify and take action against those involved in the attack.
