Mumbai, April 12 (IANS): Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away at the age of 92 in Mumbai on Sunday, marking the end of an era in Indian music. She had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday following extreme exhaustion and a chest infection. Maharashtra’s Culture Minister Ashish Shelar confirmed the news outside the hospital. Her last rites will be held at Shivaji Park on Monday at 4:00 pm.
Earlier, her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle had shared an update on social media, requesting privacy and informing well-wishers about her grandmother’s condition. Despite medical care, the iconic singer breathed her last, leaving millions of fans mourning across the globe.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in Indian cinema, Asha Bhosle began her illustrious journey with the Marathi film Majha Bal in 1943. Over a career spanning decades, she recorded an astonishing repertoire of nearly 12,000 songs in more than 20 Indian and international languages.
Her timeless hits include classics like “Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko,” “Do Lafzon Ki Hai Dil Ki Kahani,” “O Haseena Zulfonwale Jane Jahan,” and “Ye Ladka Hai Allah Kaisa Hai Diwana.” She collaborated with some of the greatest composers in Indian music, including R. D. Burman, O. P. Nayyar, Ilaiyaraaja, Bappi Lahiri, and A. R. Rahman.
In recognition of her unparalleled contribution to Indian music, she was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations of music lovers.
