In a dramatic turn in the ongoing firing case, prime accused Ranabir Debnath was arrested on Monday after creating a scene inside the Bishalgarh court complex. Debnath, who had reportedly been absconding for several days, appeared unexpectedly at the premises and staged a public protest before surrendering to police.
Eyewitnesses said the accused arrived at the court stripped to the waist and began a dharna, drawing immediate attention from lawyers, court staff and members of the public. His unusual and erratic behaviour, allegedly under the influence of intoxicants, led to confusion and concern within the court area. The situation quickly escalated as a crowd gathered around him, disrupting normal proceedings.
Security personnel stationed at the court intervened promptly to bring the situation under control. After initial resistance, Debnath eventually surrendered and was taken into custody by Bishalgarh Police Station officials. Police confirmed that he is now being interrogated in connection with the firing incident, which had earlier triggered tension in the area.
The manner of his surrender has sparked fresh debate over law and order in the subdivision. Residents and observers questioned how an absconding accused could access a sensitive judicial space and stage such a spectacle before being apprehended. Many also raised concerns about security arrangements within the court complex.
Police sources stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the firing case, including Debnath’s role and whether others were involved. Authorities are also likely to examine the events leading up to his surrender at the court, including any lapses in surveillance or intelligence.
Officials have assured that strict legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation. Meanwhile, the incident has left Bishalgarh on edge, with heightened public scrutiny on both the handling of the case and the broader issue of maintaining security and order in critical public institutions.
