Agartala, May 2 — With the high-stakes vote counting for the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election scheduled for May 4, the North Tripura district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023 to ensure a smooth and peaceful process.

The order has been issued by District Election Officer and District Magistrate Chandni Chandran, IAS, and will come into force from 6:00 AM on May 4, remaining effective until the completion of the counting process. The restrictions apply within a 100-metre radius of the designated counting centre for the 56-Dharmanagar Assembly constituency.

Under the order, public gatherings, movement of unauthorized vehicles, carrying of arms, and any activity that could potentially disturb law and order have been strictly prohibited. Officials said the measures are precautionary in nature and aimed at preventing any untoward incidents during the counting of votes.

Authorities emphasized that only authorized personnel will be allowed entry into the restricted zone. Exemptions have been granted to election officials, security forces, magistrates, and emergency service providers, along with individuals specifically permitted by the administration.

The district administration has taken steps to ensure that the public is well informed about the restrictions. Announcements are being made through loudspeakers, and the order is being widely circulated through local media channels. Copies of the directive have also been shared with key departments and agencies, including the Election Commission of Tripura, the Home Department, the Superintendent of Police, and the Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Department.

Officials have warned that any violation of the prohibitory orders will attract strict legal action under Section 223 of the BNSS, 2023.

The Dharmanagar by-election is drawing considerable political attention, particularly as the counting coincides with the declaration of assembly election results in five states, including West Bengal. In view of the heightened sensitivity, the imposition of Section 163 is seen as a critical step to maintain order and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
