Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi was trailing behind BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami after the first round of counting in Assam’s Jorhat Assembly constituency on Monday, according to early trends. Goswami secured 4,993 votes, taking a lead of 1,056 votes, while Gogoi polled 3,937 votes in the opening round.

Officials noted that only one of the 14 counting rounds has been completed so far, and the margin is expected to fluctuate as subsequent rounds are concluded. The Jorhat seat remains a closely watched contest, with both the BJP and Congress monitoring the evolving trends.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was leading from the Jalukbari Assembly constituency, providing an early advantage to the ruling BJP-led NDA as counting progressed across the state under tight security arrangements.

In the broader picture, early trends indicated the NDA leading in 80 Assembly seats, while the Congress-led opposition alliance was ahead in 26 constituencies. The counting process is still in its initial stages, and these numbers are subject to change as more rounds are completed.

Polling for the Assam Assembly elections was held on April 9, witnessing a high voter turnout of 85.96 percent from an electorate exceeding 2.5 crore. A total of 722 candidates are contesting, including 59 women.

The Congress fielded the highest number of candidates at 99, followed by the BJP with 90. The AIUDF contested 30 seats. Among NDA allies, the Asom Gana Parishad fielded 26 candidates and the Bodo Peoples’ Front 11. In the opposition camp, Raijor Dal fielded 13 candidates, Assam Jatiya Parishad 10, CPI(M) three, and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference two. Other parties and 258 Independents are also in the fray.
