Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday assured a fair and impartial investigation into the death of Rahul Kishore Roy, a Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader whose body was found under mysterious circumstances at his residence in Dharmanagar, North Tripura.
In a statement shared on social media, Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, expressed deep sorrow over Roy’s demise and extended condolences to his family. He emphasized that allegations raised by the victim’s wife would be thoroughly examined and appropriate legal action would follow as per the law.
Roy, 38, was a councillor of Dharmanagar Municipal Council and served as the Mandal President of BJYM. According to police, his body was discovered in the bathroom of his home on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred just a day after the BJP’s victory in the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election, adding to the gravity of the situation and raising suspicions among locals.
The death triggered widespread unrest in Dharmanagar, one of Tripura’s key commercial hubs. Party workers, supporters, and residents staged protests demanding immediate arrests and strict punishment for those responsible. Demonstrators blocked major roads, bringing traffic to a standstill and disrupting normal life.
Roy’s wife, in her complaint to the police, alleged that a group of miscreants—reportedly linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party and associated with newly elected MLA Jahar Chakraborti—were involved in the incident. She further claimed that she and her elderly in-laws were assaulted by the same group. The family has alleged that the incident was premeditated and possibly politically motivated.
While the exact cause of death remains unclear, police have launched a detailed investigation, examining all possible angles, including allegations that Roy may have taken his own life following humiliation. Authorities have assured that no aspect will be overlooked.
Protesters have warned of intensified agitation if swift action is not taken. With tensions running high, police have been deployed across the area to maintain order as residents await clarity and justice in the case.
