Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) is set to further strengthen its academic and healthcare infrastructure with the introduction of two new departments, while the state government has approved three additional departments, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Majumder announced on Wednesday.

Addressing the media, Dr. Majumder said the college will soon launch the Dermatology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) departments, marking a significant expansion of specialised medical services and postgraduate education at the institution. (Note: If the original intended term was “Dermatology,” this replaces the apparent typo “Dramatology.”)

He also revealed that the state government has approved three more departments—Emergency Medicine, Hospital Administration, and Transfusion Medicine. The addition of these departments is expected to enhance patient care, strengthen medical education and broaden the range of specialised healthcare services available at AGMC.

The Principal said the expansion reflects the government’s continued focus on improving healthcare infrastructure and increasing opportunities for medical education in Tripura.

Providing details on academic growth, Dr. Majumder said AGMC currently offers 97 postgraduate (PG) seats across various disciplines. The government has now approved 83 additional PG seats, which will significantly boost the institution’s capacity to train specialist doctors and meet the growing demand for qualified medical professionals.

He further informed that the college presently has 150 undergraduate (MBBS) seats. The Government of India has approved an additional 100 MBBS seats for the institution. Of these, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has already granted approval for 50 seats, while approval for the remaining 50 seats is expected within the next week.

According to the Principal, the expansion of departments and the increase in undergraduate and postgraduate seats will help improve the quality of medical education, create more opportunities for aspiring doctors and strengthen Tripura’s healthcare system.

The move is expected to benefit students from Tripura and neighbouring northeastern states by providing access to more specialised courses and advanced medical training within the state. It also marks another important milestone in AGMC’s ongoing efforts to emerge as a leading centre for medical education, research and patient care in the region.
