Agartala, Aug 11: Tripura recorded nearly four lakh tourist arrivals during the first six months of 2026, reflecting the state’s growing prominence as a tourism destination in the North-East.

Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a statement in the Lok Sabha on Monday, said 3,93,877 tourists visited Tripura between January and June this year. Of them, 3,84,453 were domestic tourists, while 9,424 were foreign visitors.

The figures underline the state’s increasing appeal among travellers, with Agartala functioning as the principal gateway to several major tourist attractions. Popular destinations include the temples of Udaipur, Neermahal, Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, the rock carvings of Unakoti and the scenic Chabimura.

The Centre has been promoting tourism across the North-East through exhibitions, fairs, festivals, digital campaigns and social media outreach. The International Tourism Mart, organised since 2013, has also provided a platform to showcase the tourism potential of the region.

The latest edition, held in Gangtok in November 2025, brought together tourism stakeholders from the eight North-Eastern states, including entrepreneurs, buyers, sellers and government agencies.

Tripura also received financial assistance for tourism-linked festivals during 2025-26. Funds were provided for prominent events, including the Neermahal Festival, Diwali Festival, Chabimura Festival and Tirthamukh Festival, which showcase the state’s cultural heritage and local traditions while attracting visitors.

Digital promotion has also gained momentum following the revamp of the Incredible India platform in September 2024. The portal features multilingual content promoting destinations across the North-East.

Tourism infrastructure in the region is being supported through Central schemes, including Swadesh Darshan 2.0, PRASHAD, Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) and Challenge Based Destination Development, with a focus on sustainable and responsible tourism.

Improved air connectivity under the Regional Connectivity Scheme-UDAN has further supported tourism, with routes such as Agartala-Aizawl facilitating easier movement within the region.

Cleanliness and sustainability initiatives, including the Swachhata Action Plan, Swachhata Pakhwada and Swachhata Hi Seva, are also being implemented at tourism destinations.

With 3.93 lakh visitors recorded in six months, Tripura is seeking to further strengthen tourism infrastructure, connectivity and destination promotion to emerge as a major travel destination in the North-East.
