Agartala, September 5, 2026: The BJP, Tipra Motha and their ally IPFT have agreed to set aside recent differences and jointly contest the forthcoming Village Committee elections in Tripura, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said on Saturday following a meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.

Dr Saha, who returned to Agartala on Saturday, said the 90-minute meeting focused on the upcoming Village Committee polls and implementation of the 2024 tripartite agreement involving the Centre, Tripura government and Tipra Motha.

“It has been decided that BJP, IPFT and Tipra Motha shall contest the ensuing elections jointly as a political formation. The alliance will stay intact,” Dr Saha told reporters.

The meeting was held at Shah’s official residence and attended by Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and BJP’s North East region coordinator Sambit Patra. Dr Saha said teams had already been formed to work out the electoral roadmap and seat-sharing arrangements.

“We shall definitely fight together,” the Chief Minister said, describing the discussions as cordial and expressing satisfaction with the outcome.

On the 2024 tripartite agreement, Dr Saha said all pending issues would be addressed after the Village Committee elections, with the implementation process expected to begin from next month.

He also stressed that implementation of the agreement would not discriminate against any community. “No single community shall face any discrimination. The interest of all the communities shall be protected,” he said.

Asked about the ongoing 72-hour strike by organisations representing surrendered militants, Dr Saha rejected allegations that the government was being weak in dealing with the situation. He said the administration could take strict action if required but preferred dialogue to resolve the issue.

Social media claims that Tipra Motha’s demand for land rights had been accepted also surfaced, though the Chief Minister did not make any formal announcement on the matter.

The implementation of the 2024 agreement has remained a major concern for Tipra Motha, with the party expressing dissatisfaction over the lack of visible progress.

The latest political understanding comes against the backdrop of the 2026 TTAADC elections, where Tipra Motha won 24 of the 28 seats, while the BJP secured four. The results significantly reshaped Tripura’s political equations and have now paved the way for renewed cooperation among the three parties ahead of the Village Committee polls.
