Agartala, September 5, 2026: Police have arrested eight people, including the owner of Swapna Foundation Rehab Centre, in connection with the alleged assault and subsequent death of a youth at the private de-addiction facility, officials said on Saturday.

The arrested persons include centre owner Shubham Biswas, office staff and individuals residing at the rehabilitation centre. Police have registered a case under Sections 118(1) and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

NCC police station officer-in-charge Paritosh Das said a complaint was lodged by Shahana Das Bhattacharya on August 16, alleging that her husband, Tuhinsubhra Bhattacharya, was assaulted at the Swapna Foundation Rehab Centre on August 9.

Following the alleged assault, Tuhinsubhra was taken to GBP Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The complainant also alleged that the family had made several payments to the rehabilitation centre towards his treatment, medicines and medical consultations, and that additional payments were subsequently demanded.

Based on the complaint, police registered Case No. 59/2024 at NCC police station and launched an investigation. During the probe, police said they found preliminary evidence suggesting the involvement of eight people, leading to their arrests.

According to police, preliminary examination and investigation also indicated marks of assault on the deceased’s body, which were reportedly documented in the relevant report. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and the events leading to the youth’s death.

The officer said no previous complaint of a similar nature had been reported against the centre before the present case. However, police claimed that the ongoing investigation had yielded sufficient preliminary evidence against the arrested persons.

Police are also investigating the financial transactions between the family and the rehabilitation centre. Officials said the family had initially paid Rs 5,000 when the deceased was admitted, while subsequent collections and demands for additional money are also being examined as part of the probe.

The eight arrested accused are expected to be produced before a court, where police will seek their remand for further investigation.

Police said the investigation remains underway and further details will emerge as the probe progresses.
